Sam I Be of PASSING TIME interviews STEVE (PIG) WHITE OF

KMFDM

GREETINGS UNSETTLED SOULS - and being that this posting is going up on December 21, 2006 - sometime around 2:30 a.m. I would like to wish you the reader and fan a MERRY CHRISTMAS before the ACLU makes it illegal to do so.

KMFDM - Legends. Masters of what people now call electronica or industrial (though Sasha says that in his opinion he has done more for the genre of "techno" than "industrial" - and we all hate labels anyway.)What would the dance floor be like without "Godlike", "Split", "Juke Joint Jezzabel", or "Money". What would the mosh pit be like without "A Drug Against War", "Glory", or "Megalomaniac"? Not to mention "More and Faster" and a million other classics of the underground. Their music has appeared in films such as Mortal Kombat, and the legacy of this band is still being written with fresh, vital CDs every year or so. So therefore read on, and yes - as always, please check out my bands site PASSING TIME if you have not heard us prior. We conduct these interviews for two reasons. One, it increases traffic to our site and two, it increases traffic to the bands. Thanks for reading, and now.... Steve...

PASSING TIME: I had seen online where Sasha said that one of the reasons he may not continue MDFMK is because he likes the lineup as it is. Having heard you, I must say that I really like what you do. Longtime axemaster Gunter had been in the band for quite some time. Was it hard taking over such a commanding and talented post?
STEVE; well obviously there was a steep learning curve for me and Jules at the time as we were thrown in the deep end at the start of the Sturm and Drang tour.I had worked with Gunter on the Pig album Wrecked, where Raymond and I invited him to London and track my original guitar parts . He is a great player very tight , very German I suppose ,always walking arround with his guitar practicing scales..However Jules and i haveworked together for a long time and once wed figured out the original KMFDM parts we so slipped into our own style for the following albums.Jules and i have very similar influences( particularly Geordie from Killing Joke) which makes playing together quite natural

PASSING TIME:How long have you been in KMFDM and what other projects have you been a part of?
STEVE;I've been a part since 2001 , although i have been working in Pig with Raymond for about 8 years prior. Sascha would send ideas to Raymond for early KMFDM ideas and we would work out riffs and vocal ideas and send them back to Sascha.Although i never got any credit for the stuff Raymond cllaimed ..i suppose you could say i was paying my dues in those days..

PASSING TIME: A lot of musicians and techies read these postings, so let me ask you what your current rig consists of and what kinds of looping interactions do you have with the sequenced tracks?
STEVE: Live I just use a messa boogie dual rectifier and wah, whammy pedal ,noise gate and tuner..We have 3 tunings which are dropped C, D and standard..I use Logic pro 7.1 in my studio at home and Native instruments guitar rig and a ultitude of soft synths ect.. We endorse Native instruments stuff so we get lots of goodies from them to..

PASSING TIME: KMFDM had gone in many directions in it's glorious career, and is sure to aquire many more. Do you find that no matter what songs you play live, someone (like myself, lol) always asks about some "other" song from the band?
STEVE:Every night someone complains!.. We've just about played all the do -able songs over the years but every now and then we find an old gem and give a good dusting off.

PASSING TIME: With all of the members to have gone in and out of the KMFDM camp, what do you feel is the gel that holds this line up together so well and do you think that the line up changes are simply part of the vision?.
STEVE:Well I think there has always been a hardcore of members in KMFDM like EN esch and gunter , Sascha obviously ..Guest vocalists seem to be the floating members so we have just become the band like they were.We are also all good mates as me Jules and Andy have known each other for a very long time .since i got them involved with Pig.All 5 of us get on socialy , we work and remix together and live in Seattle and enjoy touring together...One of the few real family type bonds that i've been involved with in the music business.

PASSING TIME: KMFDM held Wax Traxx up and made them great long after many bands had left, only to have the label turn on them in the end. How is everything going in that regard today, and is there any legal holds on any KMFDM music such as other bands have faced who have left that label?
STEVE;You will have to ask Sacha that one, old chap.

PASSING TIME: Lastly, my favorite last question: If you were given an open mic to the world, and you could say anything or address any topic - what would you like to say?
STEVE:A leading question ,but as its raining outside and i havent had lunch yet i would like to address the chef at Thai tom in Seattle and ask him the secret of his sublime Yellow curry sauce.

PASSING TIMEThanks for doing my interview, and I hope to see you again soon. God
STEVE: cheers steve white

Take me to PASSING TIME
